Special Guest Concept of the Month: Special Guest Stars in Games

In case you haven’t heard, or just don’t care, Soul Calibur IV is coming out at the end of the month. As icing on the cake (unless you hate Star Wars or guest characters, in which case it’s more like poo than icing), Darth Vader and Yoda (of that “Weird Al” song fame) will be making special appearances. Vader on PS3, and Yoda on 360. Wii, of course, will not be getting a version of SC4. I honestly can’t understand why people are shocked by that. Wii has significantly crappier graphics than 360 and PS3, and the controller is absolutely terrible for games that aren’t designed for swinging your hands around like a kid who just realized he can’t get SC4 for his Wii with special guest Link even though they already put Link in SC2, but you don’t care because you’re 14 and a bastard. Bastard. (And I’m not even writing TGoL this month!)

Anywho! I guess I should mention that some apprentice of Darth Vader, from Star Wars: Forces Gone Wild, I believe, will be a guest in both PS3 and 360. Whoopdee doo. Moving on to something important: my point! I am curious about what our loyal fanbase thinks about guest characters. Personally, I love seeing guest characters in fighting games, assuming they are characters not already from fighting games. Why on earth would I want that stupid old Tekken guy in my Soul Calibur when I could just, oh I don’t know…PLAY TEKKEN. Especially when Link is another option as a guest character. I mean come on, which version did you think I was going to pick! Jeez!

Anywhen, I want to know what YOU think. I already know what I think (and now, so do you. The line between you and I has blurred). Do you like guest characters in fighting games? Do you like guest characters in any genre of game? Do you just plain hate guest characters or crossovers in general? Do you hate it when they even change the lineup of characters at all in a series of fighting games? If you know (I should really change this to “If you have an opinion, POST!!” Everyone has opinions. I’d get so many more comments that way. OK, that settles it, I’m changing it.) nix that. If you have an opinion (that sounds kind of lame, actually. Like some stupid talk show or something. I’ll have to think this over. In the meantime) POST!!

  1. I love guest characters in games, I really do. Especially if they’re super secret _and_ console exclusive – like the Doomguy in the PC version of Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3. More of them, I say!
