nes3So Vangie and I got a nice tax refund recently, and as such we decided to invest in some non-Craigslist furniture for our living room. Part of this included a new entertainment center, one large enough to hold all of our videogame consoles comfortably. When I was done setting everything up, I noticed there was an extra spot, so I thought “Hey, why don’t I set up my old NES?”

For those of you wondering, YES it still works and YES it makes me better than you.

Anyway, I popped in Super Mario Bros., to show Vangie, which she responded to with an awestruck “whoa.” This was followed by an incredibly surprising question: “Can I try?”

For those of you who don’t know, Vangie doesn’t do platformers. Apparently, though, this aversion started with Super Mario Bros. She’s since begun playing, and it’s as if through playing the game she’s facing an old personal demon that’s haunted her since childhood. There’s been a lot of cursing and so far she’s only managed to get to 1-4, but it seems like she’s sticking with it. I bet when she gets her first “Our Princess is in another castle,” though, she’s going to be PISSED.

However it turns out, I imagine we can all expect a “Gamer Girlfriend” column out of this. Stay tuned!
