Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert Making a New Adventure Game, and You’re Funding It

This is NEWS! Tim Schafer—co-creator of Day of the Tentacle, lead designer of Grim Fandango and Psychonauts, and really nice guy who let me steal his Facebook photos—announced just minutes ago via Twitter that he’s working on a brand-new, classic-style, point-and-click adventure game: his first in nearly fourteen years.

Well, he wants to, anyway. He just needs you to fund it. SO HURRY UP AND FUND IT ALREADY!

There aren’t any details yet about the game itself (other than it’s going to be amaaaaaazing!), but if the project is funded, Schafer, along with Ron “Chuckles” Gilbert and the rest of Double Fine, will try to get it released by October of this year. The total asking price is $400,000—which seems steep, but a little less so when you note that, only a half-hour after his initial tweet, he was already $25,000 there. Three-quarters of the money will go to fund the game’s actual development, while the rest will fund a documentary to be filmed during the game’s development and released episodically throughout to all the backers.

shaf3A scene we can hopefully look forward to later this year!

The minimum donation is $15, which gets you a copy of the game on Steam when it’s released, as well as access to the beta beforehand, and an invite to a private online community where backers can discuss the game’s development and provide their own input on it. $30 gets you an HD version of the documentary and a copy of the game’s soundtrack; $10,000 gets you lunch with Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert; and $30,000 gets you a photograph of Ron Gilbert smiling. I love everything about this.

P.S. The fund went up to over $50,000 while I was typing this post. With 33 days still to go, this may actually happen!

Edit: And, it’s fully funded, not 12 hours later! Double Fine must be beside themselves right now.
