Nancy Drew’s latest adventure, Trail of the Twister, was recently released, and no one is surprised to learn that staff writer and avid Nancy Drew fan Michael Gray has already finished his video walkthrough for the game.

This video was embedded using the YouTuber plugin by Roy Tanck. Adobe Flash Player is required to view the video.

The walkthrough is 21 videos long (which is about three hours), and it comes complete with both Michael’s humorous commentary and walkthrough-style advice on how to progress through the puzzles. It’s a great help if you’re stuck and don’t know what to do next, or if you’re just looking for a funny take on an engaging mystery.

Trail of the Twister stars Nancy as she goes to Oklahoma and joins a team of tornado chasers that are being sabotaged. Is the person behind the sabotage Brooke Tavanah, the leader of the rival team? Could it be Frosty, the danger-seeking photographer who wants to get out of his contract (and who, by the way, screams like a girl)? Could it be Debbie, the organized team leader who is making secret plans to get someone kicked off the team? Could it be Scott, the super-grumpy team leader who hates everyone? Or is it one of the other two characters?

The game combines puzzle-solving with several intense action sequences, where the team is chasing a tornado, or being attacked by a tornado, or doing something that involves tornadoes while dramatic music plays in the background.

This video was embedded using the YouTuber plugin by Roy Tanck. Adobe Flash Player is required to view the video.

As the above video shows, Michael’s walkthrough includes a number of bonus videos, like music videos, death scenes and easter eggs. It also includes a walkthrough for the demo that came out before the game was released. All in all, this is the most complete walkthrough for the game that you’re going to find on the Internet today, and it’s also loads of fun. Stay twisty!

This preview came at the end of the recently-released Nancy Drew #22. They like to advertise their upcoming projects when releasing their newest products, just like Pixar used to do.

It looks like in this game, Nancy is going to Kyoto, Japan, the city where they make protocols that the United States of America ignores. I’ve had this video up for less than a day, and it’s already gotten over 100 comments, most of which are about how the preview looks like some horror movie I’ve never heard of.

And now, I will return to my cave and play Nancy Drew #22 for approximately twenty hours, or until I unlock all the achievements (so far I have three out of twelve).

I don’t mean that in the sense that it’s caused worldwide devastation and killed thousands of people (though I haven’t fact-checked that); I just mean that it’s been plaguing me since I was 12 years old, when I couldn’t progress past a certain part of the game because I kept getting eaten by dinosaurs while I was just trying to find the next town, or a save point, or a healing geyser or ANYTHING. It was very frustrating, and it’s because of this experience that I’ve harbored a life-long hatred for videogames.

Fobby: The one creature-type in this game more horrifying than the dinosaurs. You'll learn why at around video #97.

The game’s been weighing down my soul, literally, for the past 13 years, and what better way to prove my manliness than by making over 100 videos of me finally conquering it?

Of course, “conquering” may be too strong a word here (also, “manliness”), considering that I am the worst EarthBound player in the history of gaming.

I die. Frequently. I miss important things. I don’t talk to everyone. I don’t know how to manage my inventory—heck, I only barely know how to equip my armor. Watching my videos, you’d think that the only role-playing games I play are the kinds you can’t write about on a family-friendly site such as GameCola.

So why should you watch my videos? I’ll let YouTube commenter ebonymare toot my own hor—you know what, I’d better not finish that sentence, because it sounds too much like penises to me. Let’s just look at the comment:

I had LOL’d soo much during your ‘Fobby Rant’ that it actually went through different stages.

a) A spring of snorts and giggling as I try to maintain my meager shards of decorum.
b) I cackled and chortled as I clutched my stomach and awoke nearly every sleeping household member available.
c) Become immune to their rants due to the sheer hilarity it has achieved and only finally become quietier when my lungs are burning for air and my laughter is reduced to body shaking muted chuckles!

For my hilarious and insightful commentary, of course! It’s a very “stream of consciousness” style of commentary, which is a buzz phrase I’m using here to mean “sometimes you can tell what I’m saying.”

I’m going to show you the first video of the playthrough here, to give you that sweet first hit, and I’m also going to share with you my two favorite videos from the set: ”FOPPY!!!!!”, and its spirutual successor, “Fobby?!”. (The most interesting bits start about halfway through each video.) They’re not going to make much sense if you haven’t played EarthBound or watched my other videos, but they’re probably not going to make much sense if you have, either.

(Please note that I’m intentionally not sharing the video where I discuss how I was having a lot more fun with Enchanted Arms than with EarthBound, because I think that might make people mad.)

Scott wins. I don’t know if I actually want to see the Scott Pilgrim movie or not, but this trailer of the upcoming game based on the movie…based on the comic book…which appears to be in part based on classic videogames…looks way better than anything with that many stacked “based on”s has any right to be. It’s River City Ransom meets Castle Crashers meets self-awareness, complete with four-player co-op, chiptunes, coins falling out of the bad guys, and the same exact heavy-breathing animation that every single one of these games had back in the 90s, and don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about, because you do.

Games like KotOR, Lego Star Wars, and Nicktoons: Battle for Volcano Island have already shown us that licensed games don’t necessarily have to be massive-oil-spill-style tragedies; will this be the game to show us that licensed games can actually be good independent of their licenses?

Check out the trailer here:

GameCola has a long, rich history of assuming its readers have any idea what we’re talking about. Since 2002, GameCola has produced over 60 different columns and nearly 600 individual game reviews—and that’s not even taking into account anything we’ve done since The Great GameCola Relaunch of ‘10, when our fan base diversified from the people who wrote for GameCola and their family members.

Bottom line? Though we do our best to make everything accessible to everyone, sometimes ya gotta dig back through the archives to know what we’re talking about, homeslice.

That’s why you’ll probably get the most enjoyment out of our YouTube adaptation of The GameCola Podcast #18 if you’re familiar with the two major conversation topics, Deja Vu and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. The videos we’ve made for these games are entertaining in their own right, but being able to discuss them in a podcast setting allows for the kind of conversations that would get you hauled off to the funny farm if you had them with yourself.

To keep your visual organs engaged while listening to Michael Gray and Paul Franzen talk about hookers, killing people with children’s TV show props, and “The Gates of Life,” there’s completely unrelated footage of Nancy Drew: White Wolf of Icicle Creek going on at all times. Plus, as an added bonus, Michael kicks off the podcast with a delightful rendition of “Earth Angel.” You have to hear it to believe you’re listening to it.

If you’ve any interest whatsoever in Deja Vu, Phoenix Wright, GameCola’s legacy of semi-obscure self-references, or eavesdropping on people’s conversations like a creepy stalker, try out the first two videos below. The full playlist is available on the GameCola YouTube channel, and if you watch long enough, you’ll see a snowmobile crash into a big rock.

Welcome to “Speak American,” where we take a look at several games from all genres, formats and generations that have one thing in common—they all have the poor taste to speak some kind of gibberish that isn’t even American.
Episode 1

Today we’ll be playing:

Jesus – A Famicom sci-fi adventure that appears to have a lot more to do with outer space lizard men than famous human pincushions.

Neo Cherry Master – A Neo Geo Pocket slot machine game.

Penguin-Kun Wars – A Famicom game in which woodland creatures slide their balls across a table to one another. No, this one is not pornographic.

Last week, the first half of GameCola’s video walkthrough for Mega Man 3 was put on YouTube. Guess what? The second half of the walkthrough has recently been finished!

Good news: The second half of the game has a super-exciting plot!
Bad news: Just like in Mega Man 10, none of the plot is actually in the actual game itself.

Some really exciting things happen in the second half of the game. For example, we learn that Dr. Wily, the evil bad guy of the game…is the evil bad guy of the game. Shocking plot twist, I know. What’s even more shocking is that Mega Girl, the pink version of Mega Man with a ponytail…isn’t Mega Girl at all. She is, in fact, the evil Break Man in disguise. This is all explained in a dramatic cutscene in which Break Man takes off his disguise, only that cutscene was removed before the game’s release, so it doesn’t really make sense anymore.

But despite the overwhelming sense of confusion, Michael has fun playing Mega Man 3, and he discovers all sorts of interesting things, like the fact that Top Spin is the best weapon ever, the weapon selection screen is not your friend, and Proto Man has giant marshmallows on the outside of his helmet.

You can check out the entire playlist here, or just watch the second half of the game on this webpage:
