Jeremy Stock’s Top 10 Favorite Games

You may notice that my list will be mostly RPGs and almost no action games.  There’s a good reason for this.  Most of the action games out there just piss me off and I end up screaming at the TV ’till someone tells me to shut up.  RPGs are way less annoying, unless they’re named “Thousand Arms”, but that’s a different list.

10. Civilization III (PC): The pinnacle of Sid Meier’s genius.  I remember playing the original on my friend’s Tandy 1000 and those were some of my best memories.  Granted, my life hasn’t been all that interesting, but that’s the kind of stuff you remember when you live in a town of 30 people.  Well, that and shooting the neighbor’s cows with your pellet gun.

9.  Legend of Legaia (PSX): Revered by some, dissed by others , I liked the game because the fighting system was such a breath of fresh air.  Something desperately needed.

8.  Bionic Commando (NES):  I had a love/hate relationship with this game when it came out.  On one hand, I couldn’t stop playing.  I was totally addicted to it.  But on the other hand, I’d play for about 1/2 hour and get so frustrated by the difficulty level that I wanted to smash my controller.  I always thought that if I ever met the person that made this game, I would shake his hand for making the game, and then rip his arm off and beat him with it for making the game so friggin’ hard.

bionic7.  Dragon Warrior VI (SNES):  I’m so glad someone translated the ROM for this game.  It is, in my opinion, the best of the Dragon Warrior games (with VII close behind).

6.  The Secret of Monkey Island (PC):  This game got me into some trouble at school.  It was included with the library’s new computer and I played it every chance I got.  So much that they banned everyone from playing it eventually (although I hid it in a directory and still played it when no one was around).

5.  Super Mario RPG (SNES):  This game had it all.  RPG elements, action elements, adventure elements.  And you got to play as friggin’ Bowser!!  Nothing can beat that.

4.  Bahamut Lagoon (SNES):  Another ROM I’m really glad they translated.  This game is so addictive with its dragon-raising bit that I’ve played it for two months now and don’t want to stop.  Stupid work keeps getting in the way of that, though.

3.  Final Fantasy VI (SNES):  The best Final Fantasy in my opinion.  It didn’t go over the edge with customization and had a really cool story with two different worlds to explore.  Great fun and I ended up paying $112 Canadian for it when it came out.  Which is the most I’ve ever paid for a game.

2.  Chrono Trigger (SNES):  Simply put, this is the greatest game of its time.  Beautiful graphics, great story, characters I actually cared about, and best of all, it was fun.

1.  Romance of the Three Kingdom series (NES, SNES, PSX, PS2):  No other series of games has stolen as much as my life as these.  I once played RoTK IV on SNES with a friend for over 12 hours without a break because we wanted to finish it.  Even though it meant almost falling asleep at the wheel while driving him home at four in the morning, we stuck to our guns and ended the game with a huge duel between our two generals to determine the winner.  Great times.
