Welcome to NEWEST and therefore GREATEST edition of the Thumbs that just so happen to be SUPER. Apparently this was a good month for gaming, because I just wasn’t able to fit truly bad games into my schedule. So if this selection seems a bit too positive for you liking, you can always go peruse the archives and read some of Mr. Franzen’s reviews!

Anyway, lets get this show started and see just what games earned that truly *elusive* THUMBS UP!

The Sims (MXB)

Well, well, well. It’s The Sims, far away from its PC home and stuck on the giant black box. Oh my, what is it ever doing there!

As far as single player goes, the Xbox version never really comes close to its PC counterpart. The PC has too many additions and customations availed via download for the poor box to compete with! However, this game really shines with its multiplayer capabilities. Playing with a friend adds a dimension of fun to the game that easily lets you overlook how bland your character is. The gameplay is nothing new—the same you find in most every other The Sims version out there. Create your sim, live your life, go for the riches! Same old story. The game really isn’t worth it for single player alone, but if you’re looking for a snazzy two player game, it is probably worth a look.

Spice World (PSX)

WOW! A Spice Girls game! Now this HAS to be a revolutionary and epic gaming experience! Now while you may think this because, let’s be honest, they are the Spice Girls, it is sadly a untruth! SAD! The only word I could find to describe this game is painful. Well, actually you could also call it short, but not painfully short. More like, short yet still painful… MOVING ON!

The game consists of making a song and a dance video. Thrilling. The song you make consists of portions of other Spice Girl “hits,” but you can’t recreate one fully… not that I was trying… honest! Once your song is down you learn how to dance or, uh, something. I really really cannot press the limits of my mind and force it to recall such utter horrors. Please don’t make me. MAKE THE PAIN GO AWAY.

Chocobo Racing (PSX)

Looking for some cart-racing action, but you’re tired of Mario and his cronies?! Well then this is probably the game for you. It is much like the other cart-racing games out there. Speed around a track and pick up powerups and whatnot to wreak havoc on all those who oppose you, so that you may capture that infamous checkered flag and bragging rights over the other colorful cartoony characters.

However, it pales in comparison to the above-mentioned Mario series. The graphics are okay, but a bit awkward and distracting at times. Turning is also a bigger pain and takes a while to get used too. Other than that, it is a pretty sound game. While I still do prefer Mario or even the Legoized versions, there is no harm in racing a few Chocobos! Even if the game only features one…

Guitar Hero (PS2)

DDR with a guitar! Who wouldn’t want to love that idea. Guitar Hero is a innovative game featuring its own spiffy controller. Now when a game has its own controller, you know its gotta be good! Or really really bad. Thankfully, this game falls on the good side of the fence.

The game imitates a guitar as you run through actual songs trying to gain the most points, while also keeping the crowd into the exciting song you’re performing. It is a very fun game and also quite challenging. But despite its sometimes very difficult moments, you can still find it thoroughly entertaining, even moreso when you have a couple friends to compete with.

NHL ’94 (SNES)

Well now, I am going to be gentle on this game. Back in ’94-’95, whenever I actually was playing this game, it was at the cutting edge of sport games’ technologies and action-packing excitement! Sadly though, sports games keep on upgrading and updating every year.

This really hurts their replay value in the long run. NHL games now are, for the most part, light-years ahead of this game, and playing it now just makes it seem like a cumbersome slow game with some infuriating flaws. Nostalgia is the only real reason to play this game nowadays, and even then it may just be better to remember it for what it was: a very good game.. in 1995

Again, the THUMBS comes to a close. Fear not! Because next month, there will be more games and more GOOD TIMES! Perhaps the next issue will bring us a plague of retched games not worthy for human eyes! Maybe it will bring treasured gems which will be remembered for the ages! Or, more likely, it will just bring five more games…. But still, it will be FANTASTIC, no matter what it brings.

Until next month, this is the SUPER THUMBS.
