They’re Remaking Final Fantasy X Before VII

I get a lot of flack for being too snarky in these news posts, and I think this time my headline is a little over-the-top. I apologize. I’m sure there’s at least some people who’d rather see FFX remade than FFVII; I’m just not one of them, mostly because I still have my PS2, and also the original FFX doesn’t look like total poopy.

But for the rest of you, I have only this to say:

celebrate

Look for it on the PS3 and Vita, some time in the fuuuuuuuuture!

  1. How in the world is this a good business decision? I much prefer FFX to FFVII but I’m not really Squareenix’s captive audience. And FFX still DOES look and sound decent, while FFVII is unplayable — trust me, I tried a few years back, right before I went and played FFX just fine instead.

FFVII still has a rabid fanbase, much larger and more active than FFX’s (for some reason). This is totally a “what are they thinking?” moment.

  2. I think it is a poor decision because X is still a product of this generation, albeit an earlier one. Anything on the ps1 being remade is permissible because it is from the previous generation of players. Then again Square Enix may know a bit more about the desire of the masses than I do.. Just saying…

  3. @Everyone: I think the reason Sony generally cites is that it would take too long to make a high-def, good-graphic’d version of Final Fantasy VII…but I still can’t possibly think that the pay-off wouldn’t be worth it, considering how frothy everyone is for it. Maybe they’re just holding onto it as a system-seller for the PS4.

Also @Frank: I agree! I’d be shocked if there were THAT MANY PS3 owners who don’t also have a PS2, and wouldn’t just buy FFX from GameStop for 15 cents if they really wanted to play it.

  4. They may as well come out with a version of FFX that is playable on the PS3 since there’s not many PS3s that can play PS2 games left. So they’re just upconvering some graphics like the God of War collection?

What the hell is a Vita? An answer to the 3DS?

  5. @Mark: Bah! I don’t think we’re allowed to start remaking PS2 games until we’re finished with all the PS1 games everyone wants! (I will make an exception for the Ico/Shadow of Colossus two-pack, though.)

And, yep–it’s Sony’s upcoming new portable. The successor to the PSP. Coming out in Japan this winter, and in the U.S. some time next year.

  6. I’m guessing the Vita is going to be amazing. It’s the new psp. Dual analogs, touch screen on front and touch sensor on back. I think Nintendo Dropped the ball on the 3ds. your going to sell a second analog as an add on? really?

  7. @Frank: I think it looks kinda cool, too, though since I just bought a PSP earlier this year…and then realized there were only two games I wanted on it, anyway…it’ll probably be a while before I’m up for getting the Vita, myself.
