Exgenesis is Now on Indiegogo!

Is it the end of the world...or, a new beginning?

Between the press releases people send to my email and my weekly coverage of new games on itch.io, I see a lot of the same kinds of games over and over again. I’m not talking about pixel platformers, and I’m not even talking about mobile games—I’m talking about all the thousands of games that people dump out in hopes of making a quick sale (and the chance to GO VIRAL).

Every once in a while, though, I’ll come across a game that seems a little different. Exgenesis is one of those games that stands out for me, mostly because of the dedication of the developers. Here, you can watch their introduction video to see what I mean.

I almost skipped over this one at first. There’s not much to be seen in terms of demo gameplay. But, when I’m so used to the flood of Digital Media senior projects, game jam submissions, and Flappy Bird clones…it’s refreshing to see a developer that’s genuinely interested in the game they’re creating, and willing to put some effort behind it.

The game itself is a point-and-click adventure, perhaps more in the style of Myst than Secret of Monkey Island. You wander around in first person, gathering information and working through puzzles. The story seems to be about the end of the world, but at the same time (as the title “Exgenesis” might suggest), the world’s new beginning. I feel like their lack of demo material might be holding them back, but what does exist is holding my interest.

I’m curious to see how this all plays out. If you’re also interested in seeing this game be completed, supporting their Indiegogo campaign is probably the first place to start. If you’re short on cash or just have a mild interest in the finished result, you can always vote for them on Steam Greenlight.
