Featured Game Soundtrack: Blaster Master

A solid game with a solid soundtrack.

Blaster Master is the classic tale of a boy and his frog. When his frog one day hops out into the back yard and drinks from a container of radioactive material, it grows huge and burrows into the underground world where the boy has to pilot a futuristic tank and hunt the creature down.

A timeless story retold a million times throughout the ages.

Story (and awesome gameplay) aside, Blaster Master is a solid example of NES music. When you think of “videogame music”, this is the kind of stuff you probably think about—not much emotion or nuance, just a lot of energy and some kickin’ bleeps and bloops.

I usually have a bit more to say in this column, but the soundtrack really speaks for itself. While it’s not exactly on Konami’s level, it still makes some pretty good use of what the NES sound chip has to offer. Honestly, I feel like if you updated the instrumentation a bit, it’d fit right in as an OST for a modern arcade space shooter.

So, give it a listen if you need a soundtrack for your day. The full playlist is below!
