Cell Phone Games with Smimming: Part 3 – Super Mario Run

Do you like to run, but hate physical exercise? Then Super Mario Run might be the perfect game for you! But watch yourself...this game has a nasty little catch attached to it...

As loathe as I am to admit it (I’ll always love you, Link!), Mario is Nintendo’s golden child, poster boy, go-to celebrity. So it makes sense that he’d have his own cell phone game. But unlike the other Nintendo phone games I’ve showcased, Super Mario Run has an unpleasant twist in it…

That’s right! Super Mario Run can be played with just one hand! That means I can eat tacos, do homework, or even drive while playing Mario Run! (Disclaimer: Please do not play phone games and drive.)

So, unsurprisingly, in Mario Run, you run. Mario automatically starts sprinting through the Mushroom Kingdom, so the only thing the player really has to do is tap the screen to get Mario to jump.

(So maybe the name of the game should be Mario Jump…)

Jumping functions exactly like it does in the classic Mario side-scrollers. You jump to get coins and items, defeat enemies and break blocks. Oh, and obviously, to beat the levels.

The main storyline of the game seems to revolve around Bowser destroying the Mushroom Kingdom and stealing your cake (and Princess Peach, but what else is new?).

In typical Mario fashion, you must travel through different stages in order to rescue Peach and restore Mushroom Kingdom to its former glory…I think. And the reason I guess at this is because I encountered a teeny, tiny problem while playing the game.

IT

COSTS

MONEY

And as Anna pointed out, it is VERY easy to lose all your money to the gaming industry. (Plus, I am very broke…)

Sure, there is more to the game than just running through stages to rescue Peach. There’s also running through stages to recruit Toads, running through stages to collect bonus items, and running through stages to rescue Daisy. (Geez, it’s like this game has “run” in the title or something.)

Anyways, after playing through all the free levels, I wasn’t impressed enough to purchase the complete game. Sure, it’s fairly cheap—but like, think of all the tacos I could buy! Maybe if Mario was one of my favorite franchises I’d fork over the dough, but for now, I’m content with the games I already have on my phone, which are actually free to play, not just free to start.
