Is your collection of plastic musical instruments getting a bit too large and unwieldy? Good news: you won’t be amassing any further Guitar Hero instruments. Activision has decided to stop violating the corpse of Guitar Hero and put it to rest with what little dignity it has left.
The official reason from Activision is that the music game genre has steadily been declining in sales over the years. That’s a pretty odd way of saying “We fell into a bottomless pit of irrelevancy, releasing tiresome spin-offs and well-worn gameplay while our competitor released quality and innovation,” but whatever you’ve gotta tell yourself. Also, yes, this does include DJ Hero, as well. Presumably work will now begin on Call of Duty 170: Modern Warfare 5 and World of Warcraft Expansion Pack #758.
Well, that’s one soulless, rotting corpse laid to rest. Now, Activision, about those Tony Hawk games…
Looks like there won’t be any more DLC, either: http://www.destructoid.com/there-will-be-no-more-guitar-hero-dlc-193713.phtml
Seeing people talk about Guitar Hero like this actually hurts more than having watched it die over the last few years.
Aw, now that you say that I’m really sad I didn’t keep my original headline from an early draft: “Guitar Hero dead, Matt Jonas inconsolable.”
