Another month is beginning, so I KNOW there is only one thing one EVERYONE’s mind: the newest and greatest SUPER THUMBS! This edition is just jam-packed with INTENSE reviewage, so I shan’t waste any more time.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (GBA)

When I first began to play this game, my hopes of it’s greatness were ENORMOUS… OK, that’s a lie; the only thing I knew about this game was that it might possibly be the buggiest game in the history of mankind. However! I shall tell you this: I did not come across a single BAD bug in this entire RPG! That is probably due to the fact that I couldn’t take the nauseating boredom this game supplied me for two hours before I had to do the ol’ “power down.” But, I did find a way to get all the pipeweed I could handle.

The gameplay is like any other basic RPG, with anything you may have enjoyed sucked right out of it. Sounds like some good times, right? No wait, with this boring, lifeless, apparently buggy RPG, I only found BAD TIMES.

Grandia III (PS2)

So here we go from one mind-numbing RPG to one insanely fun RPG! HUZZAH! The story of Grandia III is nothing special really, and it might even remind some players of some other RPGs out there. The sidequests in Grandia III? Well they are pretty non-existent, other than a few from your local neighborhood boy detective. So! How can this game be “insanely fun” with a run-of-the-mill story and no exciting side adventures!? That is where battle system comes into play.

Now it isn’t a difficult battle system, but it does allow you to employ more strategy than in most other RPG battle systems. It is still a turned-based style, but it also throws movement into the mix. With the battle animations of your scrambling characters, the special move, and the magic added to your basic critical and combo attacks, there are more than a few things to love about each battle. It is a very easy system to learn, and while most battles won’t be very difficult, the game still allows for maximum funness! Oooooh yeaaaaaah.

Phantom Dust (MXB)

This is quiet the unique game, I must say. It is a mission-based style action game where the gameplay seems to be a fusion of card games and videogames; and who wouldn’t want that! You create you own set of skills and then battle it out. There are quite a lot of skills to choose from, ranging in offensive, defensive and other added effects. You make use of these skills to take down opponents every mission.

There are usually 1-2 opponents in each mission, and you usually choose a partner who may or may not actually do something. So even the single player mode feels a lot like a multiplayer atmosphere. Well, a multiplayer atmosphere where you face really REALLY stupid or annoying uber haxx0r’s depending on your mission. As the storyline dictates, you also run into the occasional boss, who is much tough than the fodder you are used to facing. All in all Phantom Dust provides a unique style of play which is pretty enjoyable.

Grandia Xtreme (PS2)

Hey! It’s that great Grandia battle system! Surely this will be a great game. Uh, OK. Maybe not. This is an earlier version of Grandia, and after playing III, it can be nothing but a let down. I’m sure if you enjoyed Grandia III with a super intense throbbing passion, you MIGHT enjoy this one and squeeze some enjoyment out of this game; but odds are you won’t.

It is pretty hard to claw your way through this game. Mainly this is because of one major sticking point sometimes known as voice acting. The game’s storyline, much like Grandia III’s, is very voice- and cutscene-based. It wasn’t a problem in III as they did an admirable job at it. Of course in that game, they hired actual voice actors. Apparently XTREME means bad actors with somewhat of a name value to them. The all-star lineup is headed by Dean Cain of Lois and Clark fame. The voices are just god awful and WILL make you scream in agonizing pain. The only tolerable voice is that of Mark Hamill, but even that one can get grinding. So unless you are truly desperate for Grandia action STAY AWAY.

Drakengard (PS2)

If you ever have been playing a game and thinking about how much more fun you would be having just striking down enemy after enemy with some spiffy weapons, Drakengard is the game for you. Drakengard is another mission-based game, and these missions mainly consist of taking out waves and waves of enemies. The weird thing is that it never really gets boring or monotonous. With a very large assortment of weapons, each with their own style of magic power, you can have fun in various missions over and over. Plus when you have nothing better to do, you can hop on your dragon and cause even more mayhem. GOOD TIMES!

The only downfall is that not EVERY mission lets you take out large armies on your lonesome. The game likes to throw a “fly the dragon in the sky and pray you dont die” mission or ten in on you. Well at least for me, they were “pray I don’t die” missions; others may have easier times. However. Even with these treacherous levels, the game is still loads of fun.

Well that concludes another edition of THE THUMBS. And what have we learned? Just because a game is part of a series you like doesn’t mean it won’t shatter your heart and leave you scarred for life! Or maybe we just learned BEWARE anything labeled XTREME. Come back next month for more IMPORTANT life lessons!
