In celebration of The GameCola Podcast turning 30, Alex Jedraszczak, Paul Franzen, Christian Porter, and Matt Jonas discuss the touchy topic of age in videogames. Are videogames agist? Good question, because we mostly just went on about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Topics discussed in this podcast include:
- Most games have underage characters… Don’t they?
- It’s OK to kill adults, just as much as it’s fine to kill monsters and robots
- Battletoads
- Final Fantasy characters are older than they look
- The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles aren’t very realistic teenagers
- Dodongo dislikes smoke
- Old Snake actually just has progeria
- Old people steal a lot and get senior citizen discounts
- We’re good at claiming that something unrelated is actually on topic
- Send us an e-mail!
No, seriously, send us an e-mail. If you e-mail us, you’ll receive a free mocking on the next podcast!

I need a new headset.
In the movies, the turtles first hit the ooze as babies, and then quickly grew to full sized beings, but had the mind of the a teenager. Splinter was a the rat of Himatto Yoshi, but in the cartoon Spliter WAS Himatto Yoshi. And in Europe… Well, they were the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. I guess “Ninja” somehow has an automatic negative connotation. So was it called “Hero Gaiden”? Jonas? Buehler?
The world needs more Krang and less TMNT III (and probably an equal amount of Bad Dudes).
Ninja Gaiden was Shadow Warriors over here. Same artwork, still a ninja, still Ryu. But yes, they changed the name. Ninjas were deemed a violent idea back then, not idolised and common as they are now.
