A Very GameCola Wedding

Hello all! So as some of you may have heard, I and Evangeline Rich of “Gamer Girlfriend” have tied the knot. The new Ms. Ridgaway has already posted a very lovely recap of the wedding and her feelings about it, but I thought I’d share with you some of the dorkier, gamier aspects of our wedding.

First, we have the table markers:

I designed these myself using images and fonts I found online. I was thrilled when Vangie said she’d let me name the tables, and I think these turned out really well. Admittedly, the PokePals were slightly upset that they didn’t end up sitting at the Pokemon table, but oh well. Can you identify the game each table pertains to?

Next is the cake topper, designed by our good friend Azita (who’s available for commissions, FYI!). This is simply one of my favorite things ever, and everyone who saw it fell in love with it. For those who can’t tell, it’s Jeff and Paula from EarthBound with a palette swap. Yes, it’s slightly inaccurate in that Paula and Ness were the in-game couple, but I’ve always identified more with Jeff, along with looking a HECK of a lot like him.

Next we have my weddings vows, which I was able to slip some gamer references into:

Vangie, you are my Light.

You bring me out of the dark,

Remind me of what’s best in me

And give me the courage to face my fears.

You are my Home, you make me feel welcome and safe,

With you by my side I can weather any storm or gale.

You are my Heart,

You drive away my loneliness,

Seeing passion behind the eccentricities

And loving me for it (and only giving me that look if I’m REALLY out there).

You are my best friend, my partner in crime, my fellow zookeeper, and my player two,

And every day you never cease to amaze with how

Wonderful, caring, smart, funny, and beautiful you are.

It is my greatest joy that we will be spending the rest of our lives together

And I swear that I will do my best to live up to all that you see in me.

I promise that I will always be there for you, both when you’re laughing and crying.

I promise that when plans go awry, I’ll be ready and willing to get things back on track

And I promise that I will always listen to you and make time for you, even if the new Legend of Zelda just came out.

Most of all I swear that I will always love you, respect you, and work to make every day with you as wonderful as it can be.

Aside from the obvious references to gaming, that first bit came about during a discussion regarding Kingdom Hearts. Yup, I’m a nerd. Vangie’s vows were more serious than mine and lacking in gamer references, so I’m not going to put those up in this article. If you’re curious as to what she said, you’ll just have to ask her yourself.

Lastly, though not gaming related, we did pull off a wonderfully dorky feat during our first dance. That’s right, we RickRoll’d our own wedding. BEAT THAT!
