No, you got Mario in my Portal!

This is what happened over at Stabyourself.net. Two major players, separated by an entire generation, have met up here in 2012. Meet Mari0, which puts you back in 1985’s Super Mario Bros., equipped with a Portal gun. All the basics of Portal apply here, just scaled down to the second dimension. It’s quite a compelling concept and is best explained by watching this video and giving it a shot yourself. It’s right up there with Super Mario Crossover.

Extra credit if you know what movie footage is shown in the beginning.

If you’re like me and own one of these newfangled computer machines, you can download it right to your machine and be on your way in less than a minute. It’s like playing a Nintendo game on an emulator, except you also have Portal-style controls through your mouse. If you’re also like me and have never played Portal despite it being the best game of all time, you will probably pick up the concept of the portals pretty quickly. (Although if you have a way to hook up a wired PS2 controller, you’ll be much better off.)

Oh, this also supports simultaneous multiplayer. And all at the low low cost of $0.

So what are you waiting for? You can’t customize Mario’s beard, but you can choose one of several hats and fully modify his hair color. Finally!

  1. Yes, indeed.

v1.3 is out, but there don’t seem to be any release notes anywhere in the distro.

Oh, forgot to mention that there seems to be a pretty snazzy level editor.
