The 2011 Spike TV Videogame Awards were laughable. There was one salvaging factor for the whole show: PS3 exclusive The Last of Us. However, second place goes to the latest Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. Our favorite Superman is seeing his series rebooted after being left for dead earlier this year. This is what it’s like when worlds collide.
The creatively titled Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD is an Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network reworking of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 in high definition. This is something I have secretly been pining for since falling in love with American Wasteland.
The trailer shown at the Videogame Awards and the information unearthed by Kotaku speak absolute volumes. First off, the Warehouse level looks absolutely astonishing. It’s the level I remember from 1999, but it is filled with gorgeous volumetric lighting effects, bump mapping and gosh-knows what else goodness.
However, this idea of remaking Tony Hawk in an updated form isn’t exactly new. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 contained levels from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, then THPS4 contained levels from THPS2. THUG had levels from THPS3, and THUG2 had levels from a whole bloody bunch of places. Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland had a bunch of stages from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater again, and so on.
However fun it is to speculate, if Neversoft is still behind the helm, then “don’t get your hopes up.”
Never forget those games which cast dread,
Proving Ground, Project 8, Ride and Shred.
Is THAT why Tony Hawk was there?! Huh.
