Only true ’90s kids will get this, but POGs are making a comeback!
… Is this how it feels to be old? Is this how my parents would have felt whenever a cartoon would make a joke about disco making a comeback?
Anyway, after twenty years of hibernation, the craze that swept through elementary schools across the world is trying to do it again! They have a Kickstarter an Indiegogo campaign and everything. But don’t worry if your mom threw your POGs away years ago—this time, it’s coming back as a mobile app!
Wait, what? I’m actually not sure how I feel about this. I understand the difficulties of producing a physical product and trying to build up enough hype to make it profitable, but I feel like…if they’re going for nostalgia, they’re not going to pick up as many old-time POG fans with a mobile app. If they’re targeting a new generation of kids, I’m sure there’s already a dozen free POG-style games on your app store of choice.
Sometimes popular things just pop up naturally, and there’s not a good track record for trying to force a revival based primarily on nostalgia. It sounds like they’re planning a lot of cool stuff for the official mobile game that I’m sure you won’t see in any of the existing stack-slammer apps that were probably made in high school programming classes, but I also feel like it’s an attempt to cash in on nostalgia that’s going to have difficulty finding a demographic.
Those are my thoughts on the subject, anyway. It’s time for me to go back to thinking about how Rugrats was referencing a date only 15 years in the past at the time, but now that episode itself is 26 years old. A cartoon now joking about POGs making a comeback would be referencing something more distant than cartoons in the ’90s joking about disco making a comeback.
